As much as I love Mononoke as a series, I have to wonder why the level of violence towards women is so high? Is it a theme? A show that gives so much depth and time to the complexity of people and the culture is quite telling, but at the same time, I'm not sure if I have that much faith in the world at large.

I have the same thoughts about some sci-fi series sometimes, haha. "So everything is pretty much the same in the future down to the way women are treated ... and this is supposed to be thousands of years in the future, well okay."

That being said, I wonder if Mononoke is making a point rather than deliberately being obtuse. Because it's hard to accuse the show of such.

Yeah, I'd like to think it's the former since literally everything else about it is so well thought out. I feel it would be really strange that such a point would be overlooked.

Thematically it makes sense. But unfortunately, I don't know much about Japanese folklore to know what kind of emphasis it makes on women in horror and so forth. It is a horror/myth series so it has equal footing on both.

Oooh, fair point. :|a I can't think of a lot of folklore where women are the victims ... There's plenty female youkai and such that prey on teh menz that come to mind though, so. Hmm.

I don't know how recent trends in Japanese horror affect it either. I'm not an expert in both subject materials so I find it hard to say.

Opening

It's a Japanese horror/supernatural folklore ish show about a medicine seller who travels around, killing Mononoke. How they're created, the grudges that people harbor, the wrongdoings of people and their humanity are the real highlights of this show along with its superb animation.
